During the October school holidays, our Loyola Boys Basketball team travelled to Xavier College, Kew in Melbourne to compete at the 2017 Jesuit Basketball Carnival. While there were no wins, our team showed some outstanding individual performances on the court. Namely, Matthew Ward and Isaac Bullen, who made the All Australian Jesuit Basketball Team for 2017. For his display of sportsmanship off and on the court Jaycob Scimmager was awarded the Spirit of Loyola Award.
The team consisted of Year 12 students Matthew Ward and Jack Dickson, and Year 11 students Jaycob Scrimmager, Jacob Getachew, Declan Walker, Isaac Bullen, Max Ngarua, Darnell Bernales and Tong Khon.
Our boys entered this competition excited and eager. They wanted to show up and play hard.
Sadly, with the lack of competition and game time as a team, we were left exposed to strong opposition plays and defence. Despite this, we all held our heads high right to the very end.
Our first game against the home side Xavier College showed us precisely the level of competition we were up against for the rest of the tournament. Despite a slow start to the match, our boys found their rhythm in the second half and were competitive to the end. We were defeated 83-27.
In our second game against St Ignatius’ College, Athelstone, we fought harder and smarter and came within a 2 point differential. Our shots were getting in too, and our confidence built up. However, St Ignatius’ found their rhythm in the second half and blew out the lead, defeating us 69-43.
On the second day, our third game was against dominating the opposition in St Aloysius’ College, Milsons Point. Tempers boiled but never blew out, and I'm proud of the way our boys showed maturity, calm and sportsmanship. We lost 65-29.
Our last round match was against reigning champions St Ignatius’ College, Riverview. Despite Riverview outclassing us, defeating us eventually 94-37, our boys held their heads high and were competitive to the end.
As team manager, I would like to personally acknowledge and thank the Dickson family and Ward family who came to Melbourne, and the Xavier College billet families. Without their generous support and hospitality, our boys would probably have felt very far from home.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge Mr John Murphy and Mr Ryan Reyes for coaching the team.
Well done, everybody!
